How to use swash fonts in cricut

Using fonts in Cricut can be tricky, but swash fonts can be even more challenging. Why? Because those swash characters, a.k.a: glyph or long tail letters, can not be part of your keyboard. Because your keyboard doesn’t have enough buttons to cover all the alphabet with the swash. It would take you two keyboards to cover all the characters. And if it is your first time using fonts with Cricut, you may think the long tail letters are gone or have disappeared, which can be confusing.

In this Cricut tutorial, I will show you how to use swash fonts in Cricut. The best news is that I created a new way to use fonts with your Cricut design space application.

To recap, there are two ways how font designers provide fonts. We give a font and create an SVG file for the special characters. That way, you can install the font, use your keyboard to type the regular letters and upload the SVG file to Cricut to use the tail letters as an image. Some people like it, and others think the process should be shorter.

So I decided to create a new way to use fonts in Cricut. A method that simplifies everything without the need for an SVG file.

What I did was simple, instead of creating one font. I made multiple font files for the same font. In short, the new font I am creating will consist of 2 or 3 font files. One for the regular characters, including the symbols and a second font file for all the long tail letters (The swash characters).

Let me show you how to use the font in Cricut. It’s pretty straightforward.

How to use swash characters in Cricut

I will create the word LOVE and the L will have the swash letter.

Part 1

  1. The first step is to create a new project.
  2. Click on the typing text icon on the left side of your canvas. Type the letter “l” in lowercase.
  3. Select the letter, and click on the font selector at the top.
  4. Select “System.” That means Cricut is displaying the fonts from your device or computer.
  5. Type Thalia in the font search box (I am explaining using the font named Thalia).
  6. Now you can see three files for the Thalia font. The first is the regular characters. The second and the third are for the long tail letters, the swash characters. Click on the first box. (You can click the icon “bookmark” to add the font to your favourites for your next Cricut project).
  7. Click on the canvas, and you can notice the letter “l” now uses the Thalia font.

Part 2

I prefer to create the text and the long tail letters using a separate typing box.

  1. Select the “l“, duplicate it and type “ove” because we want to create “love.” If you are on a laptop or a computer, you can right-click using your mouse.
  2. Please select the first typing box to change it to a long-tail letter.
  3. Click on the font selector at the top and click on the second or third font box. These are the long-tail letters.
  4. Click outside the font selector to see the letter “l” change to a swash character (the long tail letter).

To change the side of the tail: If you are on a laptop or computer, you can select that swash character and simultaneously push the SHIFT button + the letter “l” on your keyboard. The tail will change sides, left or right. And you can do it again without the shift button.

That’s it. Now you know how to use swash fonts in Cricut design space with a few clicks.

Happy crafting!

Why is my uploaded file appear small on Cricut?

Why is my uploaded file appear small on Cricut? 150 150 Helen

Why is my uploaded file appear small on Cricut?

You upload an SVG file to your Cricut design space canvas, and you can’t see it, or it appears very small. You wonder; why my uploaded file seems so tiny on Cricut? I can barely see it.

Well, you are not alone, and that’s not an issue at the design level. It is a bug from the Cricut application itself. Yes, you heard me well. Many people complained to the Cricut company, but it isn’t fixed yet, so I will show you how to fix it using a few clicks.

Let me show you on the video how to fix it.

Once you’ve uploaded the SVG file, you must look at the size selection. And all you have to do is to click on the lock icon to allow your file to be resized proportionally and change the size value; that’s it!

And if you can’t see where is your uploaded file, you can change the value of the “position” located right next to the resizing selection box. You can see how I moved the file using the position selector near the end of the video.

How to make a Candy Holder with Dome on Cricut | Free Tutorial

So exciting! Christmas is on its way, and kids are creating their wish lists for Santa, the perfect time to make a DIY Cricut project for Christmas. Today, I will show you how to create a cardstock candy holder with a plastic dome on your Cricut maker. Isn’t a good idea?!

Here’s a Christmas candy holder to make on your Cricut; a fantastic candy holder idea in 2022 for Christmas. Kids will love it!

Make this cute Christmas candy holder with your Cricut machine.

It might seem tricky to create at first, but it’s easier than you think. With some good instructions, your Christmas candy holder will be done in no time. And it is so cute!

Oh, and if you own a shop, you can even start selling those unique candy crafts! This tutorial is the same for any design you want to use.

This candy holder can be used as a standalone craft if you use it as is or as a Christmas candy ornament Craft if you punch a little hole on the top to tie it to the Christmas tree.

The material you need to create the Candy Holder

  1. 3.15 inches Clear Plastic Ornaments Ball
  2. Cardstock sheets (I prefer to use the glitter cardstock type)
  3. The cutest candies. I should have used some tiny Christmas candy cane instead of chocolate. It’s better to use candy colours that match your design.
  4. A Candy Holder template

The Christmas plastic ball looks like this:

The Plastic Christmas ball ornament can be purchased at any craft shop. The best deal I found is at Amazon, Michaels and Aliexpress. (Aliexpress is from China, so if you are not in a hurry, that might be the lowest price).

The tools

  1. Thin Adhesive Foam tape (That will help to align the plastic dome)
  2. The Cricut machine (That will cut your design from card stock)
  3. A Candy holder template (We will use the Christmas Santa Candy Holder from Cricutny.com in that tutorial)
  4. White glue or a Hot Gun glue

Instruction

Step 1.

We need a template, so if you like that one, you can download the SVG Candy holder. SVG is the preferred file format with Cricut because the design can be resized without losing the quality.

Cricutny.com always provides files with a Zip folder. (Zip is a compression format to save space) You can download any free Unzip tool. I like to use the free Zip Tool for Mac and PC.

If you are on a tablet or mobile, it’s easy to find a free Zip tool by typing “free zip” on the apple store or Google app store search bar.

Once you have downloaded the template, double-click or tap on the Zip folder, and a new folder will be created.

Open Cricut and create a new canvas. You will see an “Upload” button. Clicking it will allow you to browse the template and upload it to your canvas.

The digital file is already set for a 3.15-inch half-plastic ornament ball, so please do not resize it.

Your screen should look like this once you’ve uploaded your files to the Cricut design space.

Step 2.

  1. If you are ready to cut your candy holder and you are sure you have inserted your cardstock in your Cricut machine, click on the top right button “Make It” from Design Space.
  2. When prompted by the Cricut design space, you can place your cardstock on a green Cricut cutting mat and load it into the Cricut machine.
  3. Once the Cricut machine finishes the cutting, unload the green mat, and you can remove the cut pieces.

Step 3.

The best way to achieve the best result is by starting with the front side. Let’s stick these three layers with some glue. Some prefer to use hot glue. I guess it depends on the thickness of the cardstock.

Follow this image to align your layers together.

Step 4.

Finally, the last step. Let’s glue the back side with the plastic dome.

If you wonder what those lines are, this will be used as a pull tab to access all those delicious candies. How genius! Trust me, it will look professional, like those you see at Walmart. And instead of breaking the whole paper apart, your kids will have to pull the tab at the back to get out the candies, and you can keep your craft as a one-piece art.

Apply the hot glue on the edge of the plastic ball ornament.

Remember to add the candies inside the ornament ball before you glue it!

Yes, Smarties might work amazingly into this ornament ball. Still, because that is a Christmas Santa candy holder, I would use chocolate with silver or gold and red wrapping. Since the ball is not that big, it’s better to use small candies. Even better, tiny Christmas cane candies! How about you?

You now have a unique and beautiful Christmas Santa candy holder ornament.

And all you have to do is to glue the back side with the front side together, and that’s it. Your kids will even ask for more, trust me!

If you want to use it as an ornament for the Christmas tree. You can make a little hole at the top and insert a nice golden rope. That will be amazing.

Happy holiday and merry Christmas!

How to make money fast with cricut?

And she earns this money regularly only by sharing on Instagram and inviting her followers on her Youtube channel. She only has 40K followers on Youtube, so anybody can do it, even you!

Everybody can earn, there is no limit, and I work hard daily to create and post new content to attract new people to Cricutny. This, in return, helps you tremendously when you invite people!

What is the first step?

The first step is to register for a free account by clicking here. Don’t worry, you will not be charged. You only need to create a free account.

Once you are logged in, click on the gold coin located at the top-right if you are on a computer or click on the icon at the top-right if you are on a mobile or tablet. You will see a button to open your “Invite Panel.”

How do I earn money?

Then, if you open the sliding window located on the right side of your web page, you will find your dedicated sharing buttons.

By clicking on these buttons, you can share on Facebook, Pinterest, or Twitter, use your given unique URL to post on your Instagram account or send by email to your friends. There are many ways to share using your buttons or invite using your dedicated URL. (Yes, your URL looks cool, don’t worry)

Your earning total will appear on your panel. Once you click on your earnings, I will send you the money immediately, no question ask.

I see multiple people here earning enough money to cover their whole week as a salary; it’s incredible!

Scroll down to see how it works in more details

How To Start?

Just a quick reminder that you’ll need to log in to access your panel. But don’t worry, it’s totally free of charge!

Using a desktop computer or a laptop

If you are using a desktop computer or a laptop, you can click on the coin icon located at the top right. You need to be login to view it.

Using a Mobile or a Tablet

And if you are Tablet or mobile, please follow these steps below.

How it works

1. Each time you invite someone by sharing your URL or sharing through a social website and those people register to the Cricutny website, your “Invited Friends” total will increase. (But they must register (it’s free to register) to see the rise in the count. This value is not the number of times you shared)

2. Once someone upgrades (Pay via credit card) their account to Cricutny.com, it will be indicated in the “Joined Friends” section by adding +1 for each joined friend. That’s how you can distinguish between those who came from your sharing action and pay to upgrade vs those who came from your share but did not pay yet.

Click on the “Invite Friends” button.

How to invite my friends?

You are ready to invite your friends as many as you want.

You can either click on the copy button, and it will copy your unique URL, and you can paste it anywhere you want. Once your friends click on your URL, they will be redirected to a particular page on Cricutny.com.

Or,

You can share by clicking on one of the social icons. I recommend sharing via Pinterest or Facebook, but you can share anywhere.

If you wish to share via email, you can click on the Gmail icon.

In both ways, your friends will all be redirected to a special page. From there, we handle the marketing for you 🙂

How to Get Paid?

If you wish to get paid, you need a Paypal account, and you will need to enter your Paypal ID in the typing box at the bottom and click on the submit button.

There is a minimum of $25 to get your money but don’t worry; your money is safe in your Cricutny account. You can withdraw your money anytime you want with a maximum holding of 7 years.

How to claim my rewards?

Claiming Money

Once you get enough joined friends, you will see your money earned. You can click on the Coin icon, and Cricutny will receive your request. Please note there is a minimum of $25 to withdraw your money. Once your request is received, please wait between 24 to 48 hours for Cricutny to process your request, and your money will be sent to your PayPal ID.

Claiming a 6-month free upgrade

It takes a minimum of 3 joined friends only, so once you see a minimum of 3 joined friends, you can click on the key on the left side, and your account will be upgraded.

Please note that you can not claim money and free upgrade simultaneously, and you will need to choose between the two options.

For example, you click on the “key icon” to claim a free 6-month upgrade. Once it is processed, your joined friends will decrease by 3 to display your new total. The “joined friends” section is not a history of your upgraded friends but a current total of your joined friends. It is easier to understand that way 🙂

I know what my friends like, but I’m having trouble finding it online.

If you think a font or a design is missing on Cricutny, you can email me at helen@cricutny.com and suggest your design idea. I will do my best to create and add it on Cricutny as per your request. You have my trust, and I will work diligently to ensure that your friends become members of the website. Ultimately, it’s a mutually beneficial situation.

Now, you ask why Cricutny?

I used to work at Nike as a photograph and graphic designer, but I decided to pursue my passion for crafting on Etsy instead. To my surprise, I quickly became one of the top 5 sellers on the platform! However, I eventually grew tired of the strict rules and high fees and decided to start my own community, Cricutny.com studio. I’m lucky enough to have a small team of designers and font artists in New York helping me out.

With the current tough economy, it’s not fair for people to have to give up their crafting dreams because of financial constraints. That’s why we want to offer affordable graphic materials that will allow everyone to continue doing what they love without breaking the bank.

Our designs and fonts are top-notch, and I’m sure you’ll be impressed by what we’ve accomplished so far. By sharing our website, you’ll not only be part of our team but also help others discover our offerings. It’s a win-win situation – you get to make some money, and we get to help people follow their passions.

Discover a new way to earn money that lasts forever!

Even if your friends join six months later, you’ll still earn your share. Plus, there’s no cookie time limit, unlike other platforms like Etsy or Amazon. Cricutny offers a simple sharing system that adds a new revenue stream to your life.

As a designer, I, Helen, create unique designs and fonts for Cricutny while you make money by inviting your friends to join the website. It’s a simple and beautiful way to earn income without any hassle.

As someone who has worked on Etsy for years, I’ve always wondered how we could all work together instead of competing against each other. Moreover, the high fees on Etsy have been a burden on crafters for some time now. This system is the perfect solution to help you and your friends earn money quickly and easily.

🍎 Thank you for being part of this incredible journey! 🗽

Are Etsy ads working?

Are Etsy ads working? 150 150 Helen

Should you use Etsy ads? Maybe not, and here’s why.

I Spent $15000 on Etsy ads during 30 days, and guess what happened?!

It has been an expensive Etsy ads experiment, but it is worth the result. After reading this, you will never look at the Etsy ads the same way.

Fellow crafters, you asked for this experiment; here you have it without having you spend a dime!

I just got this weird thing happening on Etsy ads that I want to share with you before I forget. I am in a rush, so I am typing this quick.

First, let me say something before you get confused by this topic. Etsy does work. Yes, you can make a good living out of Etsy. The secret? Add creations as much as you can, and try your best to make each project as beautiful as possible. Think of yourself as a top designer globally, not only in your city, and people worldwide will feel your passion for what you do. That attracts buyers on Etsy!

Let say you sell custom mugs. If you use a unique design, not something you purchase from a junk design website but from professional designers, you will sell a lot. Why? Because people hunt for high-quality stuff with a unique look. By the way, that’s the main reason why I am doing my best to create you amazing creations. If you sell, I know you will come back to get my new design, It’s a win-win situation, and everybody has a happy life. But today, I want to talk about something VERY interesting because most of us are using it. Etsy Ads and Fake ads click!?

Is it possible? Etsy seems to be a huge company, after all.

Well, let see.

I am not complaining, but since I have many IT people working next to my design office here in New York, I couldn’t resist asking them for their honest opinion, and we all end up with the same conclusion. If you compare google ads with Etsy ads, Etsy seems to have this inconstancy pay-per-click rate, making Etsy untrustworthy. (That’s only our opinion, not a fact.)

But first, let me explain why I used Etsy ads because I am not sure if I should recommend it or not and here’s why.

My background

I have been working for big companies as a freelancer in New York. Uniqlo, Nike, McDonalds, you name it, and I quit a few years ago because of the intense stress. I have always been working as a designer and a photographer; A perfect match in the design world if you ask me.

I have to admit, Etsy gave me an opportunity, and I thank Etsy for that. Sometimes, we need a drastic change in life, and Etsy gave me just that. 🙂

What happened?

I have been lucky enough to run two successful Etsy shops since two years.

But something happened to me two weeks ago.

Someone sent me a message through Etsy messaging. That person asked me to increase the price of my work, or something would happen to my shop. He could barely speak English, and he was using some Vietnamese sentences. (For those who may take it the wrong way, I have nothing against Vietnamese or anyone, I am just telling the story.)

My mistake; I answered, you go f*** yourself and get a life.

Usually, I am so polite and very kind, but that message was just too much. We all work so hard every day; we don’t deserve to have this kind of people on our path, right?

What do you think happened two days later?

Some of my items got deactivated by Etsy. Uh? Seriously?? What the ****!!

I knew it was because he reported my shop to Etsy.

Imagine you create beautiful artwork; it took you over two months, and suddenly, without warning, a stranger reported your own work to Etsy and the worst, Etsy put your work offline for a minimum of 3 weeks. (Thanks to the super quick Etsy reply, they replied to me two weeks later. I get faster customer service when I order a pizza…)

And imagine if you’re selling during the Christmas holidays; Boom, in a matter of minutes, you just lost your biggest bonus of the year! And the worst, YOU CAN’T DO ANYTHING BECAUSE ETSY TAKE A MINIMUM OF TWO WEEKS TO SOLVE THE PROBLEM + another ten business days to put back your item online + another week for your item to rank back where it was before. Voila, you missed your shot, Merry Christmas!

The problem with Etsy is anyone can report you. A competitor, hangry customers, even your neighbour! All it takes is to testify you are not lying by checking that box on the infringement online form, and voila. You are offline!

Yesterday you were a joyful crafter, and today, you are a crafter and a marketing specialist, and you fight against false DMCA from your competitors. (Solution? Hello? Etsy, where are you? I thought we were partners?) Ok, I am so sorry. Maybe I am getting a bit rash today because of what I have been through recently, but that’s how I feel now. I quit my good job to go with Etsy, and I was expecting a little more protection from the Etsy company.

I know some of you say, “Etsy is not responsible for DMCA reporting in any way.” I know, same as google, but with all the fees we are all paying as a seller, are we not deserving a minimum of protection with Etsy or some trust as a seller? Should DMCA reports include tangible proof more than checking a box on an online form? Anyway, that’s another debate ah ah 🙂

The Etsy ads experiment

Then, I decided to create a new similar design and this time; I used the Etsy ads PPC. It was the first time to use it because usually, I can rank on page one at the first position for unlimited time or until a competitor reports me (Yep, Etsy is getting out of control recently).

But time is money, so I didn’t want to wait to get ranked.

And this is what I want to share with you because there is something strange that “we” can’t explain in the Etsy ads.

Let me show you what I did, and you can make your conclusion.

Here’s a screenshot two hours after I started the Etsy ads:

An hour after I started the Etsy ads. Look at the Clicks.

And, this is another screenshot 10 minutes later:

10 minutes after.

What do we see now? Within 10 minutes, there are 7 new orders with 35 new paid clicks.

Thirty-five new clicks in only 10 minutes is a lot to me, but maybe I am super famous (Being Sarcastic). What is strange is the number of paid clicks from the moment I started the campaign (Over a thousand clicks in a very short time) vs the 10 minutes test when i checked live. It doesn’t match the 10 minutes test.

When I advertise on google ads, the click seems to be pretty consistent, but when I refresh on the Etsy ads panel, sometimes, it goes from 10 to 100 in only a few minutes. It’s not consistent, and it’s ok ONLY if that is an actual number. (Nobody can prove it, and that’s the whole problem with any ads platform, Etsy, Google, Pinterest…)

I want to show you something, but unfortunately, I can’t show my sales of that specific item because Etsy deactivated it. But suppose I compared the sales two weeks ago (the item before it got deactivated) versus today. In that case, (The similar item that I just created), the new item is ranking on the same position and the same page as the one that has been deactivated. However, the deactivated design was selling more without the ads, and the sales were consistent. Probably a sales per minute.

Again, both designs were positioned on the same page on the same spot with the exact keywords, but the one not on ads was selling triple. How’s that?

So two possibilities:

  1. Etsy is generating fake clicks (Who knows, why would it be that impossible? We are millions of sellers using the ads each day, it’s a big chunk of money for Etsy if you ask me.)
  2. Or competitors are clicking over and over. The problem with this hypothesis is when you think of Google. They use a unique IP checker. That prevents someone on the same IP from counting a click twice the same day.

Believe it or not, there has been a moment when I refreshed the Etsy ads panel, and I saw the click number increasing slowly, like 1,2,3,4, as if someone was clicking right under my nose! And no, my internet is not slow ah ah. 😉

I am sure you think I am crazy, but I never thought google ads were tricked in any way, but I got this impression with Etsy ads.

I hope I am wrong because we are all spending a tremendous amount of money on Etsy ads! And we “want” to trust Etsy as much as a business partner. It would be heartbreaking to discover there is something fishy in their ads system.

Another problem is if you google “Etsy Ads CPC Sudden Increase Since Risk-Free Ads Announcement,” you will get a lot of people complaining about a similar issue on Etsy, so I am not the only one thinking something is wrong.

Update

Ok, that’s crazier than I thought. Look at this:

I increase the item by 3x times the previous price and look what is happening. I am getting more paid click with fewer orders (Which make sense), but the profit stays with the same ratio!! I can’t believe it! Whatever I do, these ads will give me the same small profit while Etsy’s profit is increasing quickly. How weird is that, you tell me!

And again, the item is on the same spot on the same first page. No difference, but the price is. All the other items around mine are almost four times cheaper. So it raises the question,” WHY WOULD PEOPLE CLICK ON MY ITEM WHEN IT’S 4 TIMES THE PRICE OF THE OTHERS AROUND?

Oh, and I forgot to mention, my item is surrounded by the exact copy of my work on the search result. Remember those scammers stealing work from Etsy sellers? Those are all next to mine and have the same thumbnails as mine but with four times lower prices than mine. Nobody would click on my items; come on.

So, Is Etsy’s clicks algorithm fair and honest or, is it the other scammers clicking on my ads over and over. Does it mean Etsy doesn’t count unique IPs? If so, that’s a huge problem, and it’s like having a hole in the wallet.

“Normally, a computer can use fake Ip address with software (NorthVPN by example), but most colossal website’s company like Google can bypass this kind of software easily. However, what works is using a router with a different IP to centralize all the computers in the room. If that’s the case, it means those scammers on Etsy are using many routers; it is surprising and costly. In any way, It’s super easy for Etsy to stop this.

Conclusion

I am not against Etsy ads, but as long as it works!

Currently, I strongly feel Etsy earns more than I do. (Listing fees, renewal fees, Pay per click ads feel … It doesn’t stop. Does it still worth being on Etsy? Yes, it does, but all these fees give useless stress that could be avoided if you ask me.

We all know Etsy will never lower their fees because it’s all about profit and not about sellers, but Etsy should charge for a “Pay per sales from clicks” instead of a “Pay per click.” We would both win and make people happier!

And I still find it very strange to see this inconsistent click rate, something I didn’t feel when I was not paying ads.

Should you use Etsy ads?

It depends. In my case, I am selling artwork under $10 each, so designers like me have no choice to be aggressive with their price strategy, but if you sell something under $5, I don’t think it is worth the risk.

It might be worth it if you are selling items over $30, but I would stop if you notice you are losing money on the first day.

Plenty of people claim that you should invest an entire month of paid ads to see the result. I am not part of that strategy; it’s too risky.

I am more the aggressive type of person, and if something is not selling by using paid ads, it means people don’t like it as much as I would like to because your ads are placed on the best spot, so you get a real and honest reaction from buyers. You make the decision after.

Common question

How much do Etsy ads cost per click?

Yes, that’s probably “the” essential factor for your Etsy ads strategy. You will pay between $0.08 to $0.50 per click.

How much should I spend on Etsy ads?

I will answer with my experience. To test the market with your product, I would start with $25 per day, and if it goes well, I would increase the amount until it’s not worthing anymore. But, it is super important to check this:

You need to compare the “Revenue from ads” vs the “You spent.”

As you can see on my ads report, I am almost losing money, so I might stop it soon if it keeps going this way.

How to ungroup SVG in Cricut design space

Ungrouping letters or images in Cricut design space is fairly simple; once you know how to do it. Let me teach you how.

In this example, I am going to take the mandala design. A very popular design with Cricut recently.

This design comes with over 100 mandala designs, so we have no choice to ungroup it to use only one design.

As a side note, the steps are the same to ungroup in Cricut on iPad.

Let’s start:

1. First, let’s upload the mandala file (If Cricut tells you the file is large, don’t worry, it’s ok. Wait, and it will upload the file.

2. The file will show in a very small size, so we need to resize it.

3. With your mouse, right-click and select “ungroup”. It will ungroup all the designs. Look at the right side.

4. Now, we want to keep only one (1) mandala design. For this, we will select the one we like and push it away.

5. Instead of selecting the layer’s eyes icons on the right side, we will create a selection all around the mandala group. That way, it will select all the designs we don’t want to use. That method is faster.

And then, click the delete button on your keyboard to remove the whole selection. Or, you can right-click in Cricut design space and select “delete.”

Voila! Now, you have the design you want to print.

The process is the same for any SVG image, so now you know how to ungroup SVG images or even letters in the Cricut design space.

Happy crafting!

How to add tails to fonts in Cricut design space

How to add tails to fonts in Cricut design space 150 150 Helen

2 Best way to add tails to fonts in Cricut

Method 1: Using Character Map or FontBook.
Method 2: Using SVG files.
Jump to the final step: How to add tails to fonts

Fonts with swashes (Some call it flourishes fonts or long-tail letters like I do) are created by font designers like me. But we don’t always create fonts with tails on the uppercase letters. As a designer, we decide what’s best for the final look. In my case, I made tons of custom fonts and graphic design for small to big companies, and after years, I noticed long-tail letters look much better on lowercase letters. While some people would not see any difference between the lowercase and uppercase swatches, I really do, and I strongly think a design or logo looks much better with lower case. That is my opinion, but I am always open to new ideas, so I did create a few fonts with capital letters with the tail, but that is not my preferred choice.

Like the Olivia font, some people often ask me where the Uppercase tail is. In my opinion, it even looks better. Since I did not create it to balance the final design, I will show you how to achieve a much better look by using the lowercase tail letter.

Let’s Start!

Method #1

Step 1.

Unzip the folder.

I always provide fonts within a zip folder to save space. PC requires software to unzip it. The one I am using is that one:

www.peazip.github.io

But any other zip software will work on a PC desktop or laptop.

You will need a Zip application on Android devices (Any Tablet or mobile; Chromebook, Samsung tab, Samsung book, etc. Some people told me they are using one of these three apps:

  1. B1 Archiver
  2. RAR
  3. WinZip

Some are free on google play store, but it comes with ads.

Luckily, it doesn’t require any zip application to unzip it on Mac or any Apple devices (iPhone, IPad, Mac Desktop).

Once all the zip application is installed, or on Mac, all you have to do is to double-click on the zip folder, and it will create a new folder. Please note the location because I have been asked many times, “where are my files.” The Zip application will ask where to unzip it. I would recommend selecting the desktop.

On mobile, it is a little bit different and annoying for a beginner, if you will. So far, it doesn’t create a new folder, but once you tap on the zip folder, it will release all the files. I say it is annoying because having all the files grouped within a folder makes it easier to manage it, but since the apple device will release the files, you can’t be sure which file is related to the font folder. I think it is the same on android devices, but I can’t tell since I never tried. I own Apple devices. Please remember that the zip folder will usually unzip the files to your “FILES” blue app colour on apple. You can browse “latest” to see all the files.

Step 2.

Double click or tap on the font file ending with the extension “.ttf.” This will install the font.

TTF font files usually are more compatible on any platform, so even if I provide the “OTF” version of the font, I still recommend installing the TTF font version to ensure you get all the special characters available.

Step 3.

Access the long tail letters.

I provide two ways to access your font tails.

  1. If I provide an SVG file, you can upload it to Cricut, and it will upload all the long tail letters. If you have uploaded the SVG file to Cricut, all you have to do is ungroup it and keep the character you need for your design using the eye icon next to the layers.
  2. The second method is a little bit advanced if you ask me because it requires you to use the Character map on PC or Font book on Mac. I call this the “copy and paste” method. That method is really for advance designers because it gives more control.

This is Character map on PC (How to access flourishes characters on PC via Character Map.)

Where is the Character Map on PC

  1. On Windows 7 and before: Character Map is located in “All Programs” →→ Accessories →→ System Tools →→ Character Map in the Start Menu.
  2. On Windows 8 and 10: The Character Map is located in the Windows Accessories folder in the Start Menu.

How to access font book on mac

You can access Font Book with a keyboard shortcut; press the F4 button on your keyboard. Once the screen panel opens, type Font Book and you will see the Font Book app.

4. Last Step.

Finally, How to add tails to fonts that don’t have uppercase with long-tail letters:

In that example, I created the word “wear,” and all I did was take the long tail letter “w” and increase its size to make it look like an upper case. Don’t you think it looks beautiful, even better than with an uppercase!? I do!

Here’s how I did it:

Step 1. I create two typing boxes.

Notice I created two separate typing boxes, not the same one.

Step 2. Make sure to select the Olivia font on the two typing boxes. (Keep in mind I explain using the Olivia font, but you can do the same with any font).

Select the font you want to use. It is normal you don’t see the tail yet.

Step 3. This is where we add the tail using Character map or Font Book.

I will use Font Book in this example, but the process is precisely the same with Character Map. We will do the copy and paste method.

1. Select the letter where you want the long tail to appear (double click on desktop computer or laptop or tap on tablet and mobile)

Select the letter where you want the long tail to appear.

2. Open Font Book or Character Map, select the long tail letter that you want and copy it. (On your keyboard, you can do the shortcut “CMD button + C” to copy or click at the top menu on “File” >> “Edit” >> “Copy”).

Make sure to double click on the letter. Selecting only one time won’t work.

3. Go back to your Cricut canva, select the letter again and paste it.

I need to mention it because I heard some people wondering why is this happening. The letter you selected will become blank, but this is normal in Cricut design space. What you have to look for is the main letter, and noticed you pasted the tail letter successfully. 🙂

The blank letter is normal in Cricut design space.

4. In the final step, move the two letters next to each and make it look the way you want it to be. Follow the designer inside you 🙂 Voila!

A simple technique, but wow! Gorgeous!

Isn’t beautiful? It’s much better than using am uppercase if you ask me!

Method #2

This method is for lazy people, ah ah! 😉

Sometimes, I include SVG files. I don’t do it every time because it takes a lot of time doing this one by one (I might be lazy too, ah-ah), but I am aware some crafter like it to save time.

If you have an SVG file template, all you have to do is upload it and ungroup it. Finally, you can use the eye icon located at the very right side of the layers and keep only the long tail letter you want for your design. As simple as that, and it takes literally 2 minutes!

Click on the ungroup selection to ungroup in Cricut design space.

How to use the eye icon on cricut design space.

You can toggle (click) on and off the eye icon to keep visible the layers (letters) you want to keep for your design.

Both methods are excellent but uploading an SVG file is much faster, while using the Character Map or Font Book is more for the advanced crafter. Not every designer provides SVG files because it’s time-consuming, but I will do my best to do it if I notice you prefer this method. You can email me about it if you want. Both ways are perfect anyway (I repeat myself because it’s true, ah ah 🙂

I hope this free tutorial helped you with your project. I wish you happy crafting, and don’t forget to visit the font section for the latest custom font creation on cricutny.com!
